First things first! You will need a passport that doesn’t expire too soon -- at a minimum it should last for 6 months after your anticipated return from your study abroad program. Apply or renew now if you need to!
Important: Make sure you sign your passport before travel, as it's not a valid document without your signature!
Visas and Permits to Stay
Semester or Year-long Students
U.S. citizens pursuing studies in Australia for a semester or year-long program must obtain a student visa prior to departure. The application process is digital, and the visa status is recorded electronically without any physical label being placed in the passport. When immigration officials scan the passport, the visa status will be verified. For year-long students, the Australian Embassy may require additional documentation and will communicate this via email.
Please review the Australia Student Visa guidelines here.
Summer Students
US passport holders studying abroad in Australia for less than 90 days do not need to apply for a student visa. Instead participants must apply for a tourist visa or 'Subclass 601 ETA,' an electronically-stored equivalent of a visa issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
