Excursions Studying abroad in Newcastle offers plenty of fun and exciting excursions and activities planned for you once you arrive! These activities will help you learn about the vast history of Newcastle and Australia, as well as the culture. *Please note some activities are subject to change.* ## Weekend/Day Trips ### 3-Day Orientation in Cairns Talk about an amazing orientation! Spend three days learning about the environmental and cultural beauty that Australia has to offer in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Whether you spend your time snorkeling or exploring the rainforest, you won't leave Cairns without some unbelievable photos and memories! ### Whale Watching During the peak whale migration season (April - September), Newcastle offers a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The excursion will provide valuable insights into whale behaviors, migration patterns, and the importance of marine conservation. As a prime location on the "Humpback Highway," students can witness the annual journey of humpback whales and learn about their fascinating habits. ### Blue Mountains Unwind and immerse yourself in nature with a weekend getaway to the picturesque Blue Mountains in Australia. Offering a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels, you can explore stunning lookouts, lush rainforests, and cascading waterfalls at your own pace. ## Local Life Activities ### Beach Picnic As the weather warms up, this becomes a favorite activity for locals. We will enjoy an afternoon at Newcastle Beach with some snacks. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and swimming is allowed. ### Surf Lesson Kiwis love water sports. You’ll have the chance to go surfing and you may even continue throughout your semester in Australia!
